A perennial food for your garden!

Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) are a hardy, perennial herb belonging to the onion family (Alliaceae). They are popular in culinary gardens for their mild onion flavor and easy cultivation. Chives are often used to add a fresh, subtle onion-like taste to dishes, and their edible purple flowers can also be used as garnishes.

Around our apples trees this year we planted chives and have been rewarded when it comes time to make dinner. Plant chives to top soup, salads, potatoes and baked breads. I commonly use it when I want that onion/garlic flavor but don’t want to chop an onion. These chives are delicious and beautiful in the garden with their long green grass like stems. I have a fond childhood memory of eating them in my friend’s grandparent’s garden that I’ll never forget.
