Gold Bar Maiden Grass (Miscanthus sinensis Gold Bar) has to be one of the most interesting foliage plants around. Unlike most other variegated grasses, the golden stripes are horizontal, crossing the leaf. The upright, tidy growth habit really shows off the patterned leaves to perfection, and although the clump expands as time goes on, it never gets out of hand. As an added bonus (as if you need one) it produces wine-red plumes in fall. Leaving the foliage in place over winter not only adds a touch of seasonal interest, also protects the crowns from the chill.
