Many of our native grasses make great ornamentals, and Purple Lovegrass (Eragrostis spectabilis) is one of these. Aptly named, you'll love the cloud of purple that appears above the tuft of green leaves in midsummer. And this plant is tough. Plant it in just about any soil, subject it to dry conditions, and it'll still perform. Use it in rockeries, plant it in a natural-looking garden, or use it as an interesting element in low-maintenance gardens. It's also great for planting on slopes, in retaining walls and as a smart way to control soil erosion.
