Western Sword Fern is a native plant to our west coast, growing along shady wooded areas & named for its elongated blade like fronds.
Native Americans used nearly every part of the sword fern. The fronds were used to line baking pits and filed high for bedding. Western Sword Fern long sturdy fronds were also used to thatch structures and separate food in storage.
When planting a sword fern, provide humus rich, well-draining fertile soil. Water deeply and regularly for the first growing season until roots are established. Sword ferns can grow 3ft tall and wide, sometimes larger with long fronds in well shaded moist areas and be carefree.
